Meeting for August 12th, 2020.

 Good afternoon everyone,

My apologies for not being present at the last meeting, I was going through some personal difficulties. I want to give a big shout out to Bianca for stepping up when I couldn't. I saw that we had some new members to the Writer's Guild and I just want to say, WELCOME:)! Additionally, since we do have some new additions, allow me to properly introduce certain individuals.

We have our administrator of the Guild, Cindy Oser. We also have Bianca, the Guilds amazing secretary. She's the one who stepped in for me while I was taking some R&R time. Then there is me. (I'm more willing to speak about myself than the others for obvious reasons.) My name is Naomi Mitchel and I'm the President of the Guild. I do have ideas and dreams for this guild and I promise you, once I get certain things straightened out on my end, I will get back to putting those on the fast track.

We do have other positions with names written on them, however, I haven't heard from any of them. As of right now, I feel safe to assume that they will be open positions once the semester actually starts.

Now, on to our talking points and reminders!

1.) As it was previously mentioned in the last meeting, the deadline for the Poetry Slam has been moved to Thursday September 1st, 2020. Feel free to add your submissions to:

referencerequest@ctcd.edu

All you have to do is record a video of yourself reciting your poem, upload the video to a google share drive and send it to the address mentioned above.

2.) If you've scrolled down through the previous posts, you would have noticed that there are a few posts where we are talking about ideas that the members of the guild can do. Some posts have been writing prompts for the members to have some fun with and some have been posts simply stating that ideas are always welcome. You can post your ideas in the comments or you can send it directly to one of the 3 individuals mentioned above. I will post my contact info in the comments below.

3.) Having actual meetings and meeting in person. As far as I know, things are still very up in the air. COVID did have a spike and CTC changed a lot of the actual classrooms to virtual classes (ask me how I know *grumbling* lol.) It's probably going to boil down to this... as soon as we know, you'll know. I do hope it is soon because I would like to actually get to meet each of you.

4.) Official Positions. Once again, we would like to hear from anyone who holds an official position. You may contact Cindy, Bianca, or myself. Once again, I will post my contact information in the comments below. There will come a time very soon to where if we don't hear from you that we will refill the position.

5.) Our next meeting will be on Wednesday August 26th, 2020 at noon. I know, that's during the first week of classes for most. It will probably be a short meeting. Just a little something to get the semester rolling.

6.) We have an additional way to stay in communication other than just the blog post. It's an app that you can put on either your laptop/computer or on your phone. It's called Discord. It's still a mild work in progress, but it has been fun so far.

https://discord.gg/p4zSbG

Once, you've downloaded the app, the link posted above should guide you to the chat room for the guild. There is a group chat where everyone can speak with each other, just like a group chat via text or Facebook. It also allows voice chats, like a phone call. Additionally, if you want to send a private message between yourself and someone else that is possible too.

(I know that this has been posted more than thirty minutes before the meeting is supposed to start, but I wanted it here in case we had any early birds. As always, feel free to post, comment, ask questions, etc. I will return closer to noon.)

    6. Does it have to have been made this year

      Delete
    7. No, not at all. It can be any original work you've done.

      Delete
    8. Biance, was included in last year's publication on a couple of things.

      Delete
    9. is it the best of the best that get in the publication or does everyone that enters get in it

      Delete
    10. Not everyone gets in. We have a judging panel. We look at originality, uniqueness, technique, emotion we feel, etc. There's about 12 judges. But don't worry, if you're planning on being a teacher and you both write and do art, you're probably a natural in both areas.

  4. Hey Naomi! Where's the camera on Discord? Amber is there and I wanted to see if we could see each other.
    Thanks!

  5. I think I broke Discord. It won't let me talk or use the camera.

    1. I don't have any answers yet about when we'll be back.

      Delete
    2. I know that's not what you want to hear. But we have had some interest in the group.

      Delete
    3. When we do go back in person, we will be able to gather in small groups very far apart for now.

      Delete
    4. No, it's fine. I kinda figured that we wouldn't be able to meet for a while and that when we did that we would have to mark out a 6ft distance between everyone. Which I don't mind doing so no problem there.

      Delete
    5. Hopefully it will be soon. It was great getting to know everyone in person (without echoes) :-)

    6. Our library FB doesn't play well with others and I don't have personal one. Don't ask. I'm hiding from the world. Since our library FB page lacks some features, we're doing all of our fall events on the CTC Facebook Live and then moving them to our library YouTube page. I hope you guys will attend some of them. I'll get the link for you to register.

      Delete
    7. Yea, that link would be good to add to our meeting posts and to the flyers. So, once you get that info please share.

    8. Here ya go! https://guides.ctcd.edu/c.php?g=940831

We're updating the place to watch it and will switch out the platforms soon. But this is the permanent link and where to register.

      Delete
  8. Oh, yea...most certainly. Those echoes were nuts >.<

  9. As far as Facebook chat, I'm fine with it. However, not every member of the guild may be okay with that level of personal info being out there.

    1. I understand that. Just an idea

    2. It's a great platform for live though. We'll be doing all of our speakers on the CTC live FB page.

    3. I do lives twice a week for my moms business so i can concur

      Delete
    4. So you're a pro! It was the hardest thing I think I've ever had to do in figuring out the Facebook streaming live connection. After a month and everyone trying it, we realized that our account doesn't want to connect. So that's why we're streaming Pictionary games on our library YouTube page on Aug 24 and 25.

    5. do those count as points to the library scholarship?

      Delete
    6. Yep. When the Foundations office gets scholarship applications, we then go down our list of who attended library events. Out of hundreds, we may find about 20 who attended and then from then only 1 or 2 that attended more than one. Then we send the names back to Foundations. It's really that easy. The more events you attend, they more chance you have. See how you're a member of the Guild? That's attendance, so that counts as well.

    1. Wednesdays have been working for me. How about everybody else?

      Delete
    2. I have a class that ends at 12 and one that starts at 1 so i can be there in between but ill probably be eating and not talking much

      Delete
    3. If you guys would like to change the day or time, the only days I can't do it are on Thursdays and Fridays.

      Delete
    4. Are your classes virtual or did you get lucky and have them in a room?

      Delete
    5. Everything is online because I work all day. I'm mostly working at home, but since I have a 40 hour work week, I thought I should just stick to online only. What about you?

      Delete
    6. What about you, Amber and Noami? How are you taking the classes?

      Delete
    7. I signed up for being in a classroom and they got moved to being virtual. So, once again...online classes and I loathe online classes. It makes it SO difficult to ask questions because I'm stuck waiting on a professor to check their email or there is a miscommunication, on and on and on and on...ugh

      Delete
    8. Do they do any WebEx or Zoom sessions to be with your professor in real time? That's one of the reasons I wanted to take classes. To walk in the shoes of students.

      Delete
    9. I have half in person half at home classes

      Delete
    10. I think that might be what's going to happen with my classes and I'm not sure how that's going to work for me. I live in the country where the Wifi that's offered is hardly good enough to do school work...much less a live stream for hours on end. I have a class that's going to be 3 hours long...so I'm a bit worried

      Delete
    11. Just know that this isn't forever if we can just keep each other's spirits up. We will definitely appreciate seeing each other in person.

      Delete
  12. Hey Naomi,

It's already 1pm. That went fast! Do you want to close out the meeting and post when our next one will occur? It was great meeting you, Amber! Here and on Discourd

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yea, that did go by quickly.
Alright everyone, we covered quite a bit of information and I know that it's a bit of reading but please go through all of the comments and see what's going on as far as the guild goes and events with CTC. Again, our next meeting is on Wednesday August 26th, 2020 at noon. More than likely it will be here on the blog and on Discord.
    Until next time:)
